It is the year 2006, another opportunity to do things in a different way. Whether those things are financial, spiritual, educational, relational, recreational, or health-focused; a new year often brings with it a bucket of motivation and a large load of trepidation about making changes in our lives.
If you have been following my column for the past five years, then you know that I am the QUEEN of introspective questions. This year won't be any different. This year I will actually take you a bit deeper into YOUR 'self' to assist you; if you are interested, with opening up and connecting with your truth. Here are several groups of questions to get your spirits flowing and your minds working for this New Year. What are you motivated to do this year? What are some of the things that you could do differently? Here, let me rephrase the question—what things did not work for you last year that you would really like to set out to do differently? What worked well for you that you want to continue to do this year?
Have you ever taken the time to sit down and really evaluate your life? Have you ever sat down to identify what worked and what didn't work in each one of the areas listed above? If not ... why not? Your life and the environment in which you surround yourself are definitely worth evaluation.
Do you have a plan for your life or are you completely living in the moment? Do you know what you want to be when you grow up? What feeds your spirit? Who feeds your spirit? And once you've identified what things and those individuals that do feed your spirit—do you spend enough quality time with them? If not, what's stopping you?
Last year was a very challenging year for me on ALL levels. Pushing 40 made me take a true assessment of my life in all of the areas that I mentioned above. As a result, I have experienced a gamut of emotions. There were things about me that I didn't want to face; like how I gave my power away to others, how I am the one that has been standing in my own way, how I allowed fear to keep me in spaces that were truly emotionally unhealthy for me, how I have been living my life under arrested development—continuously allowing the frightened little girl inside of me to dictate my actions. Many of you have read the article 'My New Attitude of Gratitude at 40'—for those who have, you know exactly what I'm referring to.
It's always easier to point out other people's faults and shortcomings. We are quick to identify those people who are in our personal space with any diagnosis we run across in a book, magazine or talk show. We get attitudes and place judgments on people in areas where we do not agree with how they are handling things. Yet we don't realize what all of that does to us.
