Prop 8 opponents file lawsuits

Gay-rights supporters in California have filed three lawsuits challenging Proposition 8, an anti-gay-marriage measure, according to Advocate.com .
According to many publications—including The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times—Californians voted to pass the proposition, putting thousands of same-sex marriages in jeopardy.
The lawyers who filed are asking the California Supreme Court to overturn the proposition, saying that the initiative is an illegal constitutional change. A spokeswoman has said that the court would respond 'as quickly as possible.'
The American Civil Liberties Union, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Lambda Legal filed the first action. Santa Clara County and the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles also sued, in addition to famed attorney Gloria Allred, who filed a separate complaint on behalf of a married lesbian couple. |
