Pictured The Tuxedo Cats: Corona and jet. Keep sending photos to WCTPets@aol.com
I have been writing this column for a few weeks now and have gotten some interesting feedback. One thing that was recently pointed out to me is that there are pets other than dogs, and there are even dogs that are not dachshunds. I was stunned! Many of my friends and, certainly, our community at large are cat people. I will admit it here and now: I am not much of a cat person, so with that in mind, I enlisted my good pal Deb to write a little something about cats.
So here is Debby Spatafora and her view on cats:
So, there's been all this talk about our wonderful four-legged friends. Well, some very important one's have been forgotten: CATS! I'm here to be their voice—not that they necessarily need one! You see, cats pretty much let us take care of them. Don't fool yourself; they're in control. Unlike dogs, cats don't seek or need our approval; in some cases it may be the other way around! Most of us have to work at being liked by a cat. Dogs are easy. Give them a little attention, play a couple rounds of fetch, and if you give them anything that resembles food, they're yours!
Cats are much more selective. They have to approve of you. When they don't—and they make it quite clear when they don't—it bothers us. We need to know why. What is it about me they don't like? Let me try again. That's a mistake! Cats, at this point, might like to give a good hiss just to remind you of who's in control! Their decision is final: NOT APPROVED!
I kid a lot about cats. I love them. I've been adopting them for over 20 years. I'm the proud mom of two tuxedo kitties. Cats are very good companions. They like to cuddle, play, purr and greet you when you come home. You get all this without the responsibility that comes with dogs. We cat people just accept that everything is on their terms—always!
If you're thinking about getting a pet, consider adopting a cat or two. There are so many in need of a good home. And remember, pets are a serious commitment. Love them, feed them and please get them fixed.
