I have done many crazy things in my life, but some may think that last weekend was really over the top. My partner Danica, dogs Topo & Bowie and I all got in the car and drove to NY for a Dachshund Fest in Manhattan. To add to the excitement I was finally going to meet some of my online doxie friends, or as we call ourselves, The Doxie Chicks. We all met on an AOL dachshund board and I have been 'talking' with them for about two years. In my defense I will tell you that the woman whose home we stayed in has been to our place, so we were not strangers in the real world.
I won't go into all the details of traveling by car with 2 small dogs, but suffice it to say that after 10 years of swearing off flying, I may now become a customer of the airlines again. We stayed over in PA on the way there, but 10 hours of driving in one day made us realize that our plan of driving straight through on the way home was unrealistic.
Our first stop in NY was out to Long Island where the dogs ran around a soccer-field-sized yard with their new peeps Kirby, Spunky, Tallula, C.C. and Teva. They had a blast and we got to rest up for the drive into Manhattan. In the city of no parking, we got a space right in front of Sandi's building! While our dogs are city dogs, they are city-grass dogs and there is no grass in Manhattan. We ended up sneaking Topo into the gated-off flower areas found in front of every building so she could do her biz. She is not a concrete gal. Bowie can go anywhere; boys will be boys.
The festival was right down the block at Washington Square Park. There were about 300 dachshunds there. The fest began with the singing of the Dachs song; Danica wants to remake it into a rap tune. After the fest we walked and walked and walked. Tons of people walking and not too many care if they step on a dog. You only need a 1-foot leash there.
The ride home was exhausting and not that I wanted to give money to a red state, we had to stay over in Ohio; at least there was grass. Here's a picture of our hostess Teva dressed for the fest.
