Seemingly, every gay man in Chicago saw his camp movie cup overflow Nov. 20 at Camp Midnight's Valley of the Dolls screening event at the historic Music Box Theatre with Academy Award winner Patty Duke, star of the movie, in attendance. The sold-out event began at 1 p.m. with a wacky pre-show hosted by Dick O'Day ( the alter ego of WCT movie critic Richard Knight, Jr. ) and included a costume parade and a Valley of the Dolls sing-a-long medley that featured David Cerda, artistic director of Hell in a Handbag Productions, who appeared in character as Dolls best-selling novelist Jacqueline Susann, and Handbag star Ed Jones, who was Helen Lawson, portrayed in the film by Susan Hayward.
The packed Music Box crowed was stunned and delighted at the conclusion of the medley when Patty Duke surprised the audience as she entered the theatre and dueted with the trio onstage in the song "Come Live with Me," a "highlight" of the 1967 camp classic. After the hilarious interactive screening, Duke returned to the stage and sat down with Knight and Cerda for a lively conversation that centered on the making of the film. Duke described the film, which critics lambasted, as a nightmare experience and went on to credit the gay community for helping her to embrace the movie decades later.
Following the screening, Duke appeared at a private meet-and-greet with fans and described her stay in Chicago as one of the most memorable in her long career. This marked only the third time that Duke has appeared at a Valley of the Dolls screening. The event was a partial benefit for the Queer Film Society. Camp Midnight, which presents the "best of the worst" in film, will return to the Music Box on New Year's Eve with its third annual showing of The Poseidon Adventure.
