Jaylin D. McClinton (he/him/el) announced that Illinois state Rep. Lamont J. Robinsonthe first openly LGBTQ+ Black state legislator in Illinois historyis endorsing his campaign in the race for Cook County Commissioner, 5th District.
McClinton would be the first Black, openly LGBTQ+ Cook County commissioner if elected.
"When I first ran for public office, it was all with the intent to help people. I know first-hand Jaylin's commitment to community and his desire to lend a helping hand at this critical inflection point for government at every level. Jaylin will do right by the people of the 5th District and I am thrilled to support him in this capacity," Robinson said in a statement.
"I am honored and humbled to have the support of Illinois's first openly LGBTQ+ Black state legislator in Illinois history. In 2018, then-candidate for Illinois State Representative Lamont J. Robinson did the unthinkable when he won his primary election and I hope to do the same on the Cook County Board as the youngest Black person and first openly LGBTQ+ Black person elected to serve and will work tirelessly to ensure that residents in my region whether in Chicago or the suburbs have the resources to thrive and get ahead," McClinton added.
Robinson joins Illinois House Black Caucus Chair Kam Buckner, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Cam Davis and 34th Ward Committeeperson Preston Brown in supporting McClinton's bid for Cook County commissioner.
The current commissioner for the 5th District is Deborah Sims, who has represented the south suburban area since 1994.
