Psychiatrist
Alfred Freedman dies at 94
Dr. Alfred M. Freedmana psychiatrist and social reformer who led the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1973 when, overturning a long-standing policy, it declared that homosexuality was not a mental illnessdied April 24 in New York City of surgical complications from treating a fractured hip, according to the Boston Globe. He was 94.
In 1972, Freedman was elected president of the 20,000-member APA, which he later said was a conservative "old boys' club.'' Its members were deeply divided about its policy on homosexuality. Upon taking office, he put his support behind a resolution, drafted by Robert L. Spitzer of Columbia University, to remove homosexuality from the list of mental disorders. The board of trustees approved the resolution 13-0, with two abstentions.
The National Gay Task Force (now known as the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force) called the development "the greatest gay victory.''
In a recent interview, Freedman said, "I felt at the time that that decision was the most important thing we accomplished.'' Freedman is survived by his wife, Marcia; two sons, Dan and Paul; and three grandchildren.
