PASSAGE: Joseph Desbles

Joseph Desbles, a member of Wellspring Franciscan Fraternity for almost two decades and a secular Franciscan for 40 years, passed away on Sept. 14.

Desbles was a member of the Midwest Men's Center of Chicago and Men Nurturing Men. After joining the latter organization in 1986, he and organization founder Earl Welther became close friends. They also were members of Good Shepherd Parish, MCC [ 1983-88 ] . Desbles was very active in Chicago Interfaith Group and attended services at Dignity, Second Unitarian Church, and AGLO; he was also a friend of St. Peter's Episcopal Church for many years.

Desbles served in many ministries within the fraternity, including two terms as minister of Wellspring. His Franciscan vocation was the most important thing in his life. According to those close to him, Desbles never let any physical ailment impede him.

A memorial mass will be held on Sept. 27 at St. Cyptrian Catholic Church, 2601 N. Clinton, River Grove, at 10:30 a.m.; then, his ashes will be interred next to his mother at St. Joseph's Cemetery in River Grove. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Christian Funeral Home, 3100 W. Irving Park Road, Chicago.

A memorial service will also be held Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis Nursing Home and Rehab Center, 500 Asbury Street, Evanston. Call 847-316-3320.

Memorials may be given to any favorite charity in memory of Joe Desbles.
