Dennis Vercher III, editor of the Dallas Voice since 1986 and a former NLGJA ( National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association ) Dallas chapter president, passed away of an HIV/AIDS-related illness on Sept. 27, according to an NLGJA press release. He was 53.
Vercher's work for the Voice chronicled important times for the LGBT community in the area. Among the issues the newspaper covered were everything from nondiscrimination measures to HIV/AIDS treatment to sodomy statutes.
He was honored Sept. 15 for his career in journalism and contributions to the local LGBT community by the Dallas Tavern Guild.
Vercher is survived by his life partner, Farron Campbell; his father, Dennis Vercher II; and his brothers, James ( Janice ) and Don ( Donna ) Vercher.
Funeral services are pending.
