OutServe highlights inadequate care for LGBTs in military

WASHINGTON, April 2, 2012 — Marking one year since its inception, OutServe Magazine is featuring a groundbreaking study by one of our very own OutServe members, a medical student at the University of Tennessee, that brings to light a very frightening truth: LGBT service members are not getting the care they need. Even more sobering, the Department of Defense is not adequately prepared or trained to provide that care.
"LGBT Health Care: How DADT Harmed Yours -- And What You and Your Doctor Need to Know," is an in-depth look at how "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) has left the Department of Defense unprepared to properly identify and provide healthcare to meet the unique needs of its LGBT service members. Associate Editor David Small discusses the impact of this new study with the author and various medical experts, and interviews the Services to determine how they intend to respond to this deficiency.
The impact of this new study, and David's analysis and interviews with the various Services, are sure to provoke a new dialogue between medical providers, the military, and the service members who desperately need this care.
This issue also features several other engaging articles such as "Chaplains + Their Gays," an open letter from a leading national coalition of military chaplains, pledging unwavering support of all LGBT military professionals. "New Zealand Pride" details lessons learned and highlights one of our Ally's perspectives on equality within the military, while "How We Won" examines the battle for repeal and discusses how temperance and understanding of the issues defeated decades of discrimination.
