While Christine Quinn's election was groundbreaking, it was by no means the only recent victory by a gay or lesbian official. According to the Stonewall Democrats Web site, several other LGBT individuals scored wins:
— Ken Reeves was elected by the Cambridge ( Mass. ) City Council to serve as mayor. Mayor Reeves is a board member of the Bay State Stonewall Democrats and a founding member of the Stonewall Democrats Black Caucus. He previously served as Mayor in the mid-1990s.
— Jim Roth was re-elected to chair the Oklahoma County Commission. Roth is the first openly gay elected official in Oklahoma, first winning office in 2002.
— Gina Genovese became the first openly gay mayor in New Jersey. Genovese was elected by the Long Hill Township Committee to lead the largest city in Morris County—and the municipality happens to be largely Republican.
— Paula Aboud was elected by the Pima County ( Ariz. ) Board of Supervisors to serve as the State Senator from District 28. She will fill the vacancy created when Gabrielle Giffords resigned to run for an open congressional seat.
— Jon Cooper this week was elected as majority leader of the Suffolk County ( N.Y. ) legislature. Cooper is an openly gay legislator who resides in the county with his partner and five children.
