Twenty handsome, intelligent and accomplished men in smart casual attire competed for the title of "One Man" Chicago Sept. 2 at the Harris Theatre for Music and Dance at an event co-hosted by Ginger Zee of NBC Chicago and Kelli Zink of Celeb TV. The title went to the man who represents the best of the city from the perspectives of community involvement, personality, intelligence and fitness.
Rendezvous Music shared the stage with talented comedienne/actress Kelly Schroeder to entertain the enthusiastic, stylish audience.
Each man was given a thought provoking question to answer, and did their best to win the prize for their favorite charity. In the end, it was narrowed to five finalists. Charming William Burfeind, representing Prevent Blindness America, was given the $5,000 check from a panel of judges that included Jerry Azumah, Arturo Gomez, Amanda Puck, Matt Lee, Jonny Immerman and Michael Segobiano.
Turner Construction Company, through its Chicago Business Unit Charity Foundation, will match the $5,000 contribution for a total of $10,000 to the charity. Burfeind also received a TAG Heuer watch of his choice. Other prizes included a one-year membership to John Allan's men's grooming club, a one-year Equinox membership and lunch for two at Mid-America Club.
Furthermore, the One Man Chicago semifinalists have been invited by Jenné Myers, the chief service officer of the City of Chicago, to be ambassadors in an advisory capacity to her work for the City of Chicago. As ambassadors, there will be opportunities for the men to attend events, give input and ideas and help Myers in her new role to find innovative ways to use service as a solution to so many of the challenges that Chicago faces. All 20 men will be able to make a difference in the lives of those in the city who need it most.
The after-party, held in the ballroom of the Hard Rock Hotel, featured the music of Na Palm. Text and photos by Steve Starr
