Memorial Day is a time to honor military personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

The Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery—located in Elwood, Illinois—is the site of the first federally approved monument honoring LGBT veterans. The monument was commissioned by the Chicago Chapter of the American Veterans for Equal Rights and was dedicated in 2015.

Also, a granite monument to the military service of LGBTs stands near the corner of Halsted and Addison in Chicago. It was dedicated in 2017.
