At the Tokyo Olympics, Canada stunned the United States 1-0 in the women's soccer semifinals to advance to the gold-medal match on Aug. 2.
According to ESPN.com, the USWNT has now failed to reach the final in back-to-back Olympics after suffering defeat at the hands of Sweden in the quarterfinal round at Rio 2016.
This was only the fourth time Canada had beaten the United States in 62 meetings. The U.S. squad suffered a major setback in the first half when goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher (who plays for the Chicago Red Stars) was forced off with a knee injury after 30 minutes.
With 15 minutes remaining, Canada was awarded a penalty through VAR (a video assistant referee) after Tierna Davidson (also with the Chicago Red Stars) fouled Deanne Rose in the box. Canada's Jessica Fleming then scored the game-winning goal.
The U.S. team will now play Australia in the bronze-medal match; Canada will play Swedenwhich beat the United States 3-0 earlier in this year's Olympicsfor the gold.
