Organizing Neighborhoods for Equality: Northside ( ONE Northside ) is holding its Inaugural Convention on Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Anshe Emet Synagogue, 3751 N Broadway. The Convention features triumphs, testimonies, and public commitments from officials, advancing campaigns for affordable housing, economic justice, violence prevention, mental health justice, and education. Doors will open at 2:00 p.m., and the program will go from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. To RSVP for the event, call ONE Northside at 773-769-3232.
State Representatives will be onstage to advance HB5701 which prohibits employers from inquiring about applicants' criminal backgrounds during the application process. Lack of access to jobs is a major contributor to neighborhood violence and recidivism.
Senate President Cullerton will also be present to address the Illinois revenue crisis which is causing a $2.2 Billion shortfall in the budget this year. Solutions to be discussed include HB390 which would close corporate tax loop holes and HB3627 which requires companies in Illinois to disclose how much they pay in taxes to the state. Currently, two-thirds of corporations pay zero income tax to the State of Illinois. This bill is a first step to generating much-needed new revenue for Illinois.
Aldermen will be on-hand to advocate for an ordinance that will preserve Single Room Occupancy buildings across the city. Over 2,500 units of this type of housing were lost to market rate development since 2011.
Chief Gulliford of the Chicago Police Department will attend regarding ONE Northside's campaign to increase Crisis Intervention Training citywide, which would greatly reduce the number of people living with mental illness in Cook County Jail.
