National Black Justice Coalition Announces Executive Director Search

CHICAGO May 10, 2017 National Black Justice Coalition's Executive Director and CEO Sharon J. Lettman-Hicks has announced that she will step down from her position in the months. Since its founding, the National Black Justice Coalition ( NBJC ) has been dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer ( LGBTQ ) people, including people living with HIV/AIDS.
Prior to coming to NBJC in 2009, Lettman-Hicks served as Executive Vice President at the People for the American Way ( PFAW ) Foundation from 2001 to 2009, where her responsibilities leading the "Homophobia in the Black Church" program. Over the course of her, Lettman-Hicks has received numerous recognitions, including being identified as a key for the LGBT equality movement by the Gill Foundation's 2007 annual report, and being named one of Rockwood Leadership institute's 24 progressive executive management leaders for the 2008-09 Leading from the Inside Out Fellowship Program. She is also featured in the 2013 award winning documentary film, The New Black, which tells the story of how the African American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights.
"NBJC's next Executive Director will be an experienced leader with an interworking knowledge the federal government and the ability to cultivate and manage relationships with: government officials, both elected and appointed; other policymakers and influencers; and national and community partners," said Lettman-Hicks, "We are seeking a strategic thinker and mission-focused visionary with legislative experience and a familiarity with both the LGBTQ and Black civil rights communities and landscapes."
To support this leadership transition, NBJC has retained Morten Group, LLC to facilitate the search process for the organization's new Executive Director. Morten Group, LLC has recently placed executive directors and other senior-level staff at numerous foundations, social justice and social service organizations around the country such as Women Employed, Community Renewal Society, Changing Worlds, the Family Defense Center, the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, and San Francisco AIDS Foundation.
