Paul Pelosi, the husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was attacked at the couple's home in San Francisco early on Oct. 28.
Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Nancy Pelosi, said the assailant is in custody and a motive is being investigated. The speaker was not in San Francisco at the time.
"The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time," read a statement from the congresswoman's office.
It's not the first time the Democratic House speaker has been targeted with threats, CNBC noted. A North Carolina man, Cleveland Meredith, was sentenced last December to 28 months in prison after pleading guilty to threatening to shoot Nancy Pelosi.
In 2007, she made history when she was elected the first woman to serve as speaker of the House.
[UPDATE: The hammer-wielding suspect who broke into the home was identified as 42-year-old David DePape, USA Today reported. On Facebook, DePape apparently posted that the trial of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, found guilty of killing George Floyd, was a "modern-day lynching," according to CNN.]
