New York Gov. David A. Patterson announced April 16 that he would introduce a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, according to the New York Times.

During a press conference, Patterson compared the situation of the LGBT community to other groups throughout history that have been excluded and have fought for equality, such as Blacks, Jews and women. He called for an end to "a legal system that has systematically discriminated against all of them."

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also spoke, commenting that " [ i ] t is not the state's place to define marriage in a way that excludes a segment of the population from the legal benefits associated with marriage, and that's why I'm here today."

Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese issued a statement on the development, saying, " [ t ] he introduction of marriage equality legislation is a strong statement by Governor Paterson and we applaud him for standing today in support of all loving and committed couples throughout New York."

Winnie Stachelberg of the Center for American Progress said, "As a native New Yorker I will be especially proud when Governor Paterson eventually becomes the first governor in the United States to sign a bill that would bring marriage equality to his or her state."
