An Oklahoma man police describe as a white supremacist was recently arrested for the October murder of a gay man, Steven Domer. According to 365gay.com, police believe the murder was part of a gang initiation. Darrell Lynn Madden, 37, is already facing charges in connection with the murder of his friend.
Controversy erupted after it was discovered that openly gay retired Gen. Keith Kerr, who asked presidential candidates about the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy during the recent CNN/YouTube Republican debate, has ties to the Hillary Clinton campaign. However, Kerr had simply signed onto a list of gay and lesbian supporters of Clinton, according to the Associated Press. CNN later apologized for allowing Kerr to ask his question.
A recent Hunter College poll found that among LGB folks, Sen. Hillary Clinton is the overwhelming favorite for the 2008 presidential election. The survey found that 63 percent of LGB people would likely vote for Clinton in the Democratic primaries, followed by Sen. Barack Obama at 22 percent. Also, the study found that 'coming out' leads to more political involvement.
The FBI recently reported an 8 percent increase in hate crimes in 2006, according to Human Rights Campaign. The FBI also reported that hate crimes based on sexual orientation are the third most common. Hate crimes based on race are the most common, followed by religion. Sixteen percent of all hate crimes in 2006 were based on sexual orientation ( up from 14 percent in 2005 ) , the report said.
Two transgender Human Rights Campaign members, in a joint letter, announced their resignation from the organization's business council recently, citing HRC's 'broken promises, the lack of credibility that HRC has with the transgender community at large, and HRC's apparent lack of commitment to healing the breach it has caused,' the letter said. Jamison Green and Donna Rose wrote that they find it 'impossible to maintain an effective working relationship' with HRC. |
