Athens, Greece-based Variety Cruises will have its first gay cruise Aug. 20-27, and will showcase the country and its islands, including Mykonos, according to a press release.The cruise departs from Marina Zea in Athens with rates starting at $2,290 per person per week, and includes swim stops in selected beaches and DJ-spun music. By a vote of 125-99, Portugal's parliament has passed a same-sex marriage measure, according to Advocate.com . The move positions the historically conservative country as the sixth in Europe to allow marriage equality.
In England, home secretary Alan Johnson may stop anti-gay Muslim preacher Anjem Choudary's attempt to hold a march in the town of Wootton Bassett, Pink News reported. Last March, Islamist extremists held a protest in Luton against soldiers returning from Iraq, holding signs calling soldiers "murderers and baby killers." After that protest, Choudary verbally attacked gays, saying they should be stoned to death.
In the Netherlands, a study conducted by psychologist Dirk Franssens, in conjunction with the HIV/AIDS organization Aids Fonds, showed that young gay Dutch men tend to have multiple partners and not use condoms, according to RNW.nl. The survey revealed that 40 percent of gay men aged between 16 and 25 had sex without condoms, leading Franssens to conclude that this group should be targeted for information campaigns.
Norman Carter, a gay-rights activist from Nova Scotia who made marriage history, has died at 72, according to TheChronicleHerald.ca. Carter and Gerard Veldhoven married in October 2004, shortly after the province's supreme court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage.
Gay magazine Attitude is offering Kirk McCambley, 21, a chance to be on its cover after it was revealed that he had an affair with Iris Robinson, a religious, anti-gay 60-year-old Northern Ireland MP who was married, Pink News reported. Robinson had the affair in 2008 while declaring homosexuality to be an "abomination" and comparing it to pedophilia; McCambley was 19 at the time.
