After 30 years, the M&M Club—Milwaukee's longest running gay bar—has closed its doors. Owner Bob Schmidt, who now resides in Florida, sold the building and an Irish pub will supposedly be moving into the Third Ward space at 124 N. Water, according to OnMilwaukee.com .
The last nights featured classic M&M events, including Friday night's long-running family-style fish fry. On Saturday night, June 10, the club welcomed karaoke group Singsational and hosted the semifinals for 2006 Pride Idol. ( The winner of that contest competed in the finals during Pride Fest. )
According to the Milwaukee LGBT History Project Web site, the club was housed in the Pabst Brewing Co. Saloon and Boarding House built in 1904, and it was renovated in 1987. It was the only LGBT club in Milwaukee with a restaurant. |
