From the 'Separated-At-Birth' file: was that Ellen DeGeneres and her new girlfriend in the Chicago Sun-Times (5-1)? Well, no; it seems it was Hilary Duff from The Lizzie McGuire Movie and her sometime boyfriend, singer Aaron Carter. Ellen and Aaron may share
hair styles, looks and interest in women but Mr. Carter is, in all probability, not a lesbian.
Did you hear NPR news (5-2) about the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping? The Smart family is suing big time for libel because some of the investigators leaked their theory on the case: they were working on the supposition that the men of the Smart set had formed a male homosexual cabal, Elizabeth had stumbled on it and had to be gotten rid of.
The NY Times (5-4) in its wedding/celebrations section which some time ago announced it would include gay and lesbian union announcements, always has one big article on a particularly interesting wedding. This week's essay was on the union of Mark Harris, editor of Entertainment Weekly, and Tony Kushner, the playwright of Angels in America. They had a traditional Jewish ceremony officiated at by Rabbi Ellen Lippman. The crowd including Mike
Nichols, Diane Sawyer and many of the two men's relatives, was in tears. Harris told of shopping for the cake and being told the designer would be glad to substitute little baseball players all over it instead of flowers.
The Chicago Tribune Magazine (5-4) cover article was 'Out Is In,' about gay teens in 'that well-known bastion of homophobia: the American High School.' The article focused on a number of students around (but not, notably, in) Chicago. Mike Piazza of Naperville North found, after he'd announced his gayness, that none of his friends deserted him. Luz Duarte of West Leyden High reports that it's almost a fad for girls there to announce bisexuality, even, Luz says, when she suspects they're not. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network says gay-straight alliances, high school clubs promoting tolerance, have jumped from six in 1990 to 1,640 today.
From the 'He-said-She-said' file the Chicago Sun-Times (4-29) quoting the Star tabloid is hooking up The Practice star Camryn Manheim and actress (and Chicagoan) Ann Cusack as hand-holding girlfriends. Any news on Cusack's brother? |
