Viewers will meet four straight women who have found real, lasting love with gay men in the Sundance Channel's latest original series, Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys, which is scheduled to air in December, according to a press release. The women range in age from their mid-20s to mid-40s, and all live in New York City. One couple, Crystal McCrary and Nathan Williams, was recently named "Power Couple of the Year" by a New York gay publication.
Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays ( PFLAG ) honored GLEE executive producer/creator Ryan Murphy and Lisa Cholodenko, the director of the film The Kids Are All Right, at its Oct. 1 gala in West Hollywood, Calif., according to PR Newswire. Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet, who play the gay couple on the TV series Modern Family, emceed the event. Others who appeared included singer Nelly Furtado, GLEE actress Jane Lynch, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and So You Think You Can Dance judge Adam Shankman.
Australia's Next Top Model host Sarah Murdoch said that she is extremely sorry after announcing the wrong winner of the show, according to MyFoxDC.com . Murdoch announced that 19-year-old Kelsey Martinovich won; however, as the celebration got going, Murdoch then said that fellow finalist Amanda Ware was the correct winner. Murdoch told the show A Current Affair that a producer neglected to tell her the correct result as she announced Martinovich's apparent victory on air. She immediately shot down allegations that the mistake was a publicity stunt.
On his Twitter page, rapper 50 Cent posted an item suggesting that any man who doesn't like women should commit suicide, according to Advocate.com . He posted, "If you a man and your [ sic ] over 25 and you don't eat pu**y just kill your self damn it. The world will be a better place. Lol." Truth Wins Out, a non-profit organization that fights anti-LGBT religious extremism, had issued a release, asking 50 Cent to clarify his remarks. The rapper later tweeted, "The other night I made a joke about a blow job. My male followers enjoyed it. So I then went on to joke about women receiving the same....Some how they turned a simple joke about oral sex into a anti gay statement. I have nothing against people who choose and [ sic ] alternative life...Style in fact [ I've ] publicly stated my mom loved women. It funny how people think negative statements are news worthy but positive statements are not worthy of coverage."
Anderson Cooper will join the daytime talk-show fray next year. According to Advocate.com, Cooper will host a one-hour show that will cover everything from social issues to pop culture. The syndicated series is slated to debut fall 2011. In a statement, Cooper said, "With this new program I hope to relay important information and relate to people and the audience in a completely different way."
Director Julie Taymor and U2 members Bono and the Edge recently offered a sneak preview of Broadway's Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark on Good Morning America, according to E! Online. The $60 million show features the New York skyline as well as supervillains such as the Green Goblin and Swiss Miss, who's made of Swiss Army knives. Taymor said that the show is "a combination of what is visceral, real tactile theater mixed with high technology with flying that's never been done before over the audience." Opening night is slated for Dec. 21.
Tony Curtis, who had an acting career that spanned six decades, died of cardiac arrest in Las Vegas, Nev., Sept. 29, according to People.com; he was 85. Curtiswho was born in 1925 with the name Bernard Schwartzwas in more than 125 movies, including 1958's The Defiant Ones, with Sidney Poitier ( for which Curtis was nominated for an Oscar ) ; and 1959's Some Like It Hot, in which he and co-star Jack Lemmon play musicians on the run who dress in drag; the latter film also featured the legendary Marilyn Monroe. Among those who survive him is daughter Jamie Lee Curtis.
Ron Rifkin, who plays Uncle Saul on the ABC series Brothers & Sisters, told The Advocate that he loved it when the show's producers asked him to play a gay character, On Top Magazine noted. Rifkin, 70, said, "One of the reasons I was interested in exploring this character is we don't often see a guy my age gay on television, explored in an intelligent, dignified, funny serious way." Rifkin's character came out three years ago; at the end of last season, viewers learned that Uncle Saul is HIV-positive.
The situation involving actor John Travolta and a group of alleged gay lovers has mushroomed as writer Robert Randolph told the National Enquirer that another six men have supposedly come forward, alleging sexual relations with the actor, according to NineMSN.com . Randolph, who is coming forth with a book about Hollywood's gay subculture, has said that he's been deluged with e-mails since revealing he supposedly saw Travolta with other men at saunas and spas.
In an MTV video, former *NSYNC singer Lance Bass admitted that he used to be a bully, according to Advocate.com . Bass said that he bullied other students to conceal his own homosexuality. He said, "I was one of the first ones to jump on the bandwagon and make fun of a gay person, and look how I turned out. I had a secret this whole time ... Singer Lady Gaga is reportedly planning an English wedding later this year, according to a Digital Spy item that cites The Sun. Gaga supposedly wants to marry boyfriend Luc Carl in a castle when her world tour returns to the United Kingdom in December. The event will allegedly involve the "Poker Face" singer arriving in a horse-drawn carriage, with burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese performing.
The 3-D phenomenon is continuing, with several big-name films being shown in that format. The proposed live-action version of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit will be released in 3-D; however, the first Hobbit film is not slated to be released until Dec. 12, 2012, according to Digital Spy. Also, Titanic will be re-released in 3-D within the next two years, and George Lucas plans to do the same with the Star Wars franchise, beginning with Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Singer Melissa Etheridge says that she's ready to start dating again, according to People.com . Etheridge, 49who split from wife Tammy Lynn Michaels approximately six months agosaid, "You gotta be fearless about these things." Etheridge also admitted how tough it is being a single parent: "I have four kids. It's hard because, of course, it's easier with two [ parents ] , but you're a mom and you do what you do."
On the Oct. 4 episode of TV's Dancing with the Stars, comedian Margaret Cho and partner Louis van Amstel danced to "Copacabana" in a performance meant to convey a message of pride and hope for gay teens. After the performance, Cho told co-host Brooke Burke, "We wanted to celebrate pride. We wanted to show ourselves off. It's a tough time for the gay community. A lot of gay teenagers have committed suicide, so we want this to end now!"
