Man arrested for vandalism of LGBTQ+-owned suburban bakery

Authorities in Lake in the Hills, a suburb of Chicago, have made an arrest in the case of the vandalism of a bakery that had to cancel an all-ages drag show because of the crime, ABC 7 Chicago reported.

Joseph I. Collins, 24 of Alsip, was taken into custody after allegedly vandalizing UpRising Bakery and Cafe.

According to a news release from police, Collins was later transported to the McHenry County Correctional Facility for his bond hearing. Bond was set at $10,000. (Ten percent applies.) He was charged with a hate crime (Class 4 felony) and criminal damage to property (also a Class 4 felony).

They added, "The Police Department is disheartened this happened in our [village], [remains] steadfast in our commitment to public safety and [has] zero tolerance to crimes against all members [of] our community."

"People we're calling us groomers. People were calling us pedophiles," said Jakki Love, one of the individuals slated to perform at the show, according to ABC. "Obviously, there's damage happening last night, but this has been an ongoing thing for the past month."

We are appalled by the senseless hate crime," Village President Ray Bogdanowski said in a statement. "The fact that the suspect had come to our Village from a town 60 miles away is also disturbing."

In the days following the announcement of "Starry Night Brunch Drag"—which was slated to take place during the evening of July 23—owner Corinna Sac said someone walked in and spit on the cafe's display case, another left a bag of feces outside the door and someone posted a letter on the business that read "pedophiles work here," according to NBC News. She even had someone report her to the Department of Children and Family Services.
