On April 4, a one-hour, pre-taped 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards aired on TNT and TBS, celebrating the best achievements in film and TV performances for 2020.
According to Entertainment Weekly, it was a historic night, with all four film acting categories going to people of color for the first time.
Heading that distinguished list was Viola Davis, who won for Female Actor in a Leading RoleMotion Picture for her role as the title LGBT singer in the film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. She prevailed over Amy Adams (Hillbilly Elegy), Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman), Frances McDormand (Nomadland) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman).
Other film acting awards went to the Daniel Kaluuya (Male Actor in a Supporting RoleMotion Picture, for Judas and the Black Messiah); Yuh-Jung Youn (Female Actor in a Supporting RoleMotion Picture, for Minari); and the late Chadwick Boseman (Male Actor in a Leading RoleMotion Picture, for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom).
The award for Motion Picture Cast went to The Trial of the Chicago 7, which edged Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Minari and One Night in Miami. Wonder Woman 1984 won for Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.
On the television side, the comedy Schitt's Creek (which ended last year) won for Comedy Series Ensemble and Female Actor in a Comedy Series (Catherine O'Hara). Co-star Annie Murphy was nominated alongside O'Hara, while openly gay actor/writer/producer/creator Dan Levy and his father, Eugene Levy, were nominated for Male Actor in a Comedy Series. (They lost to Jason Sudeikis, for his lead role in Ted Lasso.)
The Crown won in the Drama Series Ensemble category over Better Call Saul, Bridgerton, Lovecraft Country and Ozark. Other winners included Mark Ruffalo (Male Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries, for I Know This Much Is True), Anya Taylor-Joy (Female Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries, for The Queen's Gambit), Jason Bateman (Male Actor in a Drama Series, for Ozark), LGBT actress Gillian Anderson (Female Actor in a Drama Series, for The Crown) and The Mandalorian (Stunt Ensemble in a TV Series). |
