Mexico City was expected to see its First Lesbian March on March 21.
Around 1,000 participants were expected to parade from the Monument to the Revolution to the ZĂ"calo, the political epicenter of Mexico.
In a press statement, organizers said: 'Twenty five years into the lesbian movement in Mexico, lesbian-feminists proclaim our need for autonomous spaces that do not compromise our ethics in the construction of a society that is critical of heterosexism, neoliberalism and other fundamentalisms through the First Lesbian March of Mexico and Latin America.
'While we continue to support the LGBT march,' they said, 'we want as lesbians to have a public voice that is autonomous, heterogeneous, positive and free. The march will be an expression of our rebellious spirit as lesbians.'
Among the U.S. attendees expected were Monica Taher from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
'The lesbian march constitutes a turning point in Latin American politics and activism,' she said. 'I will be ... pitching the event to [ the networks ] Telemundo, Univision, CNN en Español and others. GLAAD has seen the eminent need to ensure the fair, accurate and inclusive portrayals of LGBT Latina/os in Spanish-language media.'
