An incoming student at Chicago's Loyola University has apologized for an anti-gay tweet.

The student, who owns the Twitter account Pipe_Dawwg, originally posted, "Got into Loyola Chicago with $70,000 MERRY CHRISTMAS YOU FAGGOTTS [sic]!!!"

The student emailed an apology to Windy City Times: "I just wanted to reach out to you and apologize for any way in which I may have offended you or anyone else. I was extremely excited about my acceptance letter and now realize that my impulsive tweet may have offended many people.

"In no way was my tweet meant as an insult to anyone in the LGBTQ community. I go to an arts high school where many of my peers and friends are part of the LGBTQ community. In no way am I anti-gay. I am not trying to justify my words in any way, but at my high school many of my friends who are gay are very comfortable with the word 'faggott' [sic] and use it often. I completely understand why people would be offended by this and again I am extremely sorry for my tweet. I am embarrassed by my ignorance and insensitivity and hope that you can understand."

Inquiries to admissions staff at Loyola were not answered as of the press deadline.
