Local Trans Day of Remembrance events planned

The National Transgender Day of Remembrance ( TDOR ) is Monday, Nov. 20. It honors the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

In addition, during the week of Nov. 14-20, individuals and organizations around the country participate in Transgender Awareness Week to help increase the visibility of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.

Below are just some of the local events to mark that special day/week:

—Northeastern Illinois University, 5500 North St. Louis Ave., will host a Trans Day of Remembrance vigil on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 3 p.m. at the Pedroso Center, B159. See https://www.neiu.edu/university-life/angelina-pedroso-center-diversity-and-intercultural-affairs/pedroso-upcoming-events.

—Chicago Theological Seminary will host an event Friday, Nov. 17, 7:30-9:30 p.m. at its fourth-floor chapel at 1407 E. 60th St. Holy Covenant, A Church for Me and the Heyward-Boswell Society are hosting the free event.

—Brave Space Alliance, 1434 W. 51st St., will host a Transgender Day of Remembrance ( TDOR ) reframing on Sunday, Nov. 19. The TDOR reframing will take place 2-3 p.m. with a workshop involving America in Transition, a documentary series that explores family, community, and social change for trans people of color.

At 3 p.m., a TDOR March for Liberation will commence at 51st and Halsted streets. People will then congregate 4:30-6 p.m. at Brave Space Alliance. See "TDOR Reframing" on Facebook.

—At Rockford's Unitarian Universalist Church, 4848 Turner St., there will be a TDOR event that PFLAG's Rockford chapter and the Yellow Brick Road Organization are hosting on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 1-4 p.m. Among other things, the film Gender Revolution will be shown. —Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted St., will host its annual TDOR event at 5:30-9:30 p.m. The evening will include a welcome reception, a candle-lighting and bell toll ceremony, followed by a panel discussion on trans people and intersectionality. —Howard Brown Trans Day of Remembrance Wed., Nov. 20, 5-8 p.m., Jeffery Pub, 7041 S. Jeffery Ave, Chicago to honor the TGNC folks who have been lost to transphobic violence while also celebrating community resilience and brilliance. Theme is "Reaching Beyond the Candles," with food, live entertainment from TGNC performers, and a DJ. With Trisha Holloway, Channyn Lynne Parker, Switch the Boi Wonder, Savannah Westbrooke, CoCo Mattel, Amalia Black and Darling Shear.

—Chicago's North Park University, 3225 W. Foster Ave., will host a TDOR event 7-10 p.m. on Nov. 20. There will be a vigil and artwork will be placed around campus. See www.northpark.edu/event/qa-transgender-day-remembrance/ .

—St. Peter's United Church of Christ in South Bend, Indiana ( 915 N. Ironwood Dr. ) will host a TDOR event Monday, Nov. 20, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
