Members of the Rainbow Sash movement, which seeks to change Catholic church policies on gays, will be attending mass across the U.S. on Pentecost Sunday, May 30. 'We will wear a Rainbow Sash as a symbol of our dignity, honesty, and integrity,' the group stated. Cardinal George in Chicago has told his priests not to give communion to those wearing the sash.
The leaders of DignityUSA, the nation's oldest organization for GLBT Catholics, spoke out against withholding Holy Communion from Church members.
MergeMedia, a marketing communications agency specializing in the GLBT market, announced its selection by Coors Brewing Company, the third-largest brewer in North America. MergeMedia will develop an integrated marketing strategy to help Coors Brewing Company enhance their message and further connect with GLBT consumers. The marketing campaign has already begun across the U.S., including in Windy City Times and other gay newspapers. 'We've made significant strides since the 1970s and are actively working to realize our vision of becoming an even more inclusive and diverse company,' said Doug Sanborn, corporate relations manager for the GLBT community at Coors.
But several Chicago bar owners and activists signed a letter of protest against the Coors family May 19. 'We are the first to admit that the Coors Brewing Company has initiated good policies and has changed substantially,' Art Johnston said. 'Nonetheless, profits from the company are used by the Coors family to support some of the most anti-gay organizations and initiatives in this country. That is their right. And it is our right to turn our backs on products that enrich antigay activity.'
