Library board president leaves post over anti-LGBTQ statements

Cook Memorial Public Library District Board President Bonnie Quirke has now resigned from her post, The Daily Herald reported.

Quirke, 80, of Libertyville, had served on the board since 2005 and had been its president since 2009. She came under fire this month for accusing libraries of promoting "the homosexual agenda" in a speech she made to a conservative group nearly 10 years ago but that was only recently circulated.

Quirke's speech was lambasted by more than a dozen district residents, as well as some fellow trustees, during a June 16 meeting that was held remotely because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In her resignation letter, Quirke insisted she was not racist or homophobic. She accused her critics of orchestrating the public criticizing.

She is also on the board of directors of Lake County Right to Life, according to her LinkedIn profile.
