Comedian Jerry Lewis has apologized for using an anti-gay slur during his record-setting Labor Day telethon that benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
'I made a joking comment to a member of my production staff. I apologize to anyone offended,' Lewis, 81, said in a statement, according to E! Online.
During the 18th hour of the telethon, Lewis said to a cameraman, 'Oh, your family has come to see you. You remember Bart, your oldest son,' he said, pointing to one camera. Then, pointing to the other, he said 'Jessie, the illiterate fag,' according to CNN.com .
In a statement, Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation ( GLAAD ) President Neil G. Giulianoaccepted Lewis' apology. 'GLAAD thanks Jerry Lewis for his swift and direct apology for this incident,' stated Giuliano. 'We join millions of Americans in applauding the important work of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and wish MDA and Mr. Lewis much continued success in their efforts.'
Despite the incident, this year's telethon raised a record $63.8 million, a $3 million jump from last year's event.
