Older and wiser
Dear Editor:
Thank you for including the article by Charles-Gene McDaniel ( 'Gay Gerontophobia' ) in the June 25 issue. His photo and words demonstrate that growing older can be quite delightful. The Peter Pan boys who are never going to grow up are in for a surprise. Until they do, they should reserve judgment.
If it were not for the mature 'pariahs,' gay people would not enjoy the freedoms they do. Perhaps the reason they make some people uncomfortable is that they are intimidated by their courage and success. They dared to be different. The conformity in dress and behavior that the young adhere to limit their expression.
Next time a mature man walks into a bar, thank him. If he is older than you, he is probably wiser than you as well. You could benefit by knowing such a person.
And please don't flatter yourselves and think that the mature man is interested in your bodies. They are not impressed with the superficial. It is a shame that your heroes are limited to those in show business. The mature gay man you ignore or make fun of is a real hero you can identify with.
Mature gay men created the world you enjoy. Move over and share.

Gorgeous George
Dear Editor:
I'm glad to see a positive article on George Michael ( 'Wham! bam: George Michael dazzles,' July 16 ) and his performance. Other articles have been less than favorable.
I am truly one of the biggest fans of George. I was there for his Chicago performance; I had came all the way from Kentucky just to see him and the two hours-plus that I was there were truly worth the trip. Just to see the fan base that he still very much has was something to see. He is still one of the best there is, and for this to be his last tour ever is a sad thing for someone like me. However, I can understand what he said about going out on top—and he will.
Sincerely,
