Dear Tracy, writers, and staff at Windy City Media Group,
We wish to express our heartfelt thanks for your encouragement to go public with the information that declining sales had brought Women & Children First to a very fragile point economically and that our survival was in serious question. Thanks for your trust in the community to rally in support of one of its own and for using your considerable power to feature our story in such a way that other media were attracted to tell it, too. The Chicago Tribune, WYCC-TV, Publishers Weekly, PFLAG-TV, Dyke Dive ( forthcoming ) , WLUW ( forthcoming ) , and numerous writers' blogs all picked up on it and passed it on. As a result, many more customers have come to the store to buy their books, a record number of people have signed up to be members of the bookstore, and several groups have offered to throw benefits for our Women's Voices Fund. Wonderful ideas have been proposed to raise money and awareness and to develop strategies to keep the store sustainable. The outpouring of support has been a terrific financial boost. It's also been gratifying and soul-satisfying.
Thank you, Tracy, and the whole Windy City family for all you've done for us.
We are also deeply grateful to all of you who responded so decisively to the news of our troubled circumstances and who have also sustained us for all or part of our 27 years. You readers who stop in to browse and walk out with a handful of treasures. You teachers who order books for your classes through us, and you business and organization leaders who order in bulk from us for your workplace. You online shoppers who use womenandchildrenfirst.com instead of saving a few bucks at amazon.com, knowing that doing so helps keep us around while still getting you any book you want. You dedicated customers who buy not only what's on our shelves but special order books we don't carry in stock. All of you who make up the community we are part of and serve. You who have given us a surge of hope that, together, we can keep this community place alive and well in real time and space.
And finally, thank you for your suggestions for improving Women & Children First, for letting us know how to make it the bookstore you want to call yours. Please keep the ideas coming.
Gratefully, Linda, Ann and all the staff at Women & Children First
