UNBELIEVABLE! We targeted a record seven seats currently held by seven anti-choice senators with seven solidly pro-choice candidates. While winning one or two of these seven races would have been a great day for reproductive rights, we went on to win FIVE of the seven races.
In January 2007, newly-elected pro-choice Senators Michael Bond, Michael Noland, Michael Frerichs, Linda Holmes and Dan Kotowski will make the Illinois Senate the most pro-choice Senate ever in Illinois. All of our incumbent pro-choice senators who were up for re-election this year were re-elected.
ALL of our House pro-choice incumbents were re-elected, including both Mike Boland and Mike Smith in downstate Illinois, both of whom faced very serious challenges from aggressive anti-choice opponents. In addition, newly-elected State Reps. Sandy Cole and Lisa Hernandez will both replace anti-choice representatives in the new General Assembly.
Todd Stroger, the Cook County Board President-elect, ran a very visible and successful pro-choice campaign, promising to meet the reproductive health needs of all women in Cook County, regardless of financial resources! All pro-choice Cook County Commissioners were victorious and we continue to hold a solid pro-choice majority on the Cook County Board.
Every statewide constitutional office in Illinois will now be held by pro-choice elected officials who were elected or re-elected. 'The Most Pro-Choice Governor in the Country' leads the charge. Congratulations to Gov. Blagojevich, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Secretary of State Jesse White, Comptroller Dan Hynes and Treasurer-elect Alexi Giannoulias.
Thank you to everyone whose financial support made these incredible victories possible. In the closing 48 hours of several of these critical House and Senate campaigns that we won by only a handful of votes, we spent over $50,000 on last-minute phone calls, media buys, mail and GOTV efforts. It made THE DIFFERENCE in several of these races on Election Day.
