Lesbian cop helps subdue Va. shooter

One of the two members of the U.S. Capitol police credited with preventing a June 13 shooting on an Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field from turning into a massacre is a member of the LGBTQ community.
According to a White House pool report, President and First Lady Melania Trump "met with Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner and her wife, [receiving a] bouquet of flowers." Officer David Bailey was the other policeman.
Bailey and Griner were described by officials as being in good condition without life-threatening injuries.
Belleville, Illinois, resident James Hodgkinson, 66, showed up at the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park the morning of June 13 and reportedly asked Rep. Jeff Duncan ( R-South Carolina ) if "Democrats or Republicans" were practicing on the field. Hodgkinson, who had a semiautomatic rifle and a handgun, shot at least 50 rounds of ammunition, hitting GOP Whip Steve Scalise and three others before authorities killed him.
"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol police officers who took down the gunman during a very, very brutal assault," President Trump said.
This is not the first time an LGBTQ officer had a part in preventing a more horrifying gunfre-related situation involving a politician. In 1975, Oliver Wellington "Billy" Sipple—a decorated U.S. Marine and Vietnam War veteran who happened to be gay—grabbed the arm of Sara Jane Moore as she fired a .38-caliber pistol at then-U.S. President Gerald Ford outside the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, causing her to miss. Sipple died in 1989.
The game went on as scheduled on June 15. |
