The Latina/o LGBT PRIDE Picnic celebrated 10 years of community and pride Aug. 15 in Humboldt Park.
After storms threatened the event, the clouds parted and the celebration was in full force. The picnic had a community resource area, plenty of food and fun activities for children. DJ Wanda and DJ [X]P kept people dancing and in good spirits all day. The event was topped off with performances from some of the community's top talent.
This year's picnic theme of "Entre Familia" ( "Within our family" ) honored the past 10 years of organizing by and for the Latina/o LGBT community. Orgullo en Accion, a group of Latino/a LGBTQQ community members united in working for social and political change, organized the event.
"We are so honored to have our community out in full force despite the rain. It's great to be amongst comunidad who are always full of love," shared Dulce Quintero, an Orgullo board member. "It's especially beautiful that because of community the picnic can celebrate 10 yearsand maybe even more!"
Orgullo board member Tony Alvarado-Rivera mentioned the revamping of Entre Familia, a social support group for Spanish-speaking parents of LGBT children, and the Latino Leadership Summit. For more information on programs and events or to get involved, visit OrgulloEnAccion.org .
