The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA) revealed the nominations for the 2021 Dorian Film Awards on Feb. 11.
Minari leads the way with six nominations, including best film and best foreign-language film; Nomadland scored five nominations, including best film, best director and screenplay (Chloe Zhao), best actress (Frances McDormand) and Most Visually Striking Film.
In the past, GALECA has named movies such as Moonlight and Carol both best film and best LGBTQ film—but this year the lists for those two categories are completely different. The contenders for Best Film are First Cow, Minari, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal; the nominees for Best LGBTQ Film include Ammonite, The Boys in the Band, I Carry You With Me, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Supernova and Uncle Frank.
Best Actor nominees are Anthony Hopkins (The Father), Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom), Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) and Steven Yeun (Minari). Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman), Frances McDormand (Nomadland), Nicole Beharie (Miss Juneteenth), Sidney Flanigan (Never Rarely Sometimes Always) and Viola Davis (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) are up for Best Actress.
Best Director nominees include Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), Kelly Reichardt (First Cow), Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) and Regina King (One Night in Miami).
Of course, the Dorians also include categories such as Campiest Flick and the aforementioned Most Visually Striking Film. Some of the movies in one or both categories include Birds of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman 1984, Wolfwalkers, Nomadland and Mank.
Zhao and Boseman are both up for the group's Wilde Artist Award. The other nominees for the Wilde Award—named for Oscar Wilde and given to a "groundbreaking force in entertainment"—are Regina King (who made her feature directorial debut in 2020, with One Night in Miami), Dolly Parton and Elliot Page.
The winner of the Society's Timeless Star career achievement award—with past recipients including Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep, Sir Ian McKellen and Lily Tomlin—will be announced in the group's April 18 Dorians Film Toast special.
As ever, the Dorians honor both mainstream and queer titles, but the pandemic necessitated special allowances: Movies given a theatrical or digital theatrical release from January 2020 to Feb. 28, 2021, were considered.
The winners will be celebrated in the Dorians Film Toast 2021 special set to air on queer platform Revry on April 18.
