A coalition of dozens of LGBT organizations fired off a letter to President George W. Bush, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist regarding immigration reform.
In the missive, the contingent expressed its concern about a bill being considered by the U.S. House of Representatives that would simply make being an undocumented immigrant a felony. Among the items that has many worried is that the measure 'could subject our organizations, as well as those who love and care for their undocumented immigrant partners and loved ones, to criminal prosecution,' the letter stated.
The group also praised certain components of the measure, including proposed protections for migrant workers. However, the coalition also asserted that 'much is still missing.'
Among the organizations that signed off on the letter were the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Invisible 2 Invincible ( a Chicago Asian/Pacific Islander group ) , Queers for Economic Justice, and the Massachusetts Area South Asian Lambda Association.
