Openly gay singer and songwriter Kevin Aviance was savagely beaten by a gang of youths in the East Village of New York City on June 10, according to the New York Post.
Aviance, 38, told The Post that a group of teens followed him after he left the a gay bar, screaming, 'F---ing faggot! Where are you going?' The teens then began tossing trash at him, and Aviance was then sucker-punched and stomped on.
Someone helped Aviance walk to the nearby hospital. He suffered a shattered jaw and had severe bruises all over his body. His jaw was to be wired shut.
By the next morning, cops had arrested all four youths. Police charged four young people aged 16 to 20 with hate crime assault and hate crime harassment, Reuters reported. They were identified as Jarell Sears and Akino George, both 20; Gregory Archie, 18; and Gerard Johnson, 16, according to the Associated Press.
Aviance—who's behind the dance-floor hits 'Alive' and 'Din Da Da,' among others—had planned to take part in Gay Pride parade and festivities, but will now be unable to do so.
