It was R&B night at the Chicago Theatre Nov. 10 with John Legend headlining the "Made To Love" tour.
Opener Tamar Braxton brought her Love and War album into the spotlight, starting with backup dancers who would have been perfect for a gay nightclub. Channeling a Beyonce look with a fierce attitude, Braxton could brought a bit more Gaga to her style, since her husband Vince is Lady's manager and could have provided pointers in creativity.
There was no need for such a large band with the strong backing track obviously noticeable after hearing vocals of invisible back-up singers. Braxton rambled a bit; fans were just waiting for the title track, which really soared. It must have been a bit early to check out her new holiday music on Winter Loversland so hopefully she returns soon to feature it.
John Legend sauntered onstage, showing how comfortable he is with performing live. The notes practically fell out of his mouth and rolled off the piano into the air.
He's a piano man who doesn't like to sit down often and, as always, walked out into the audience to be close to his fans. His set list was massive, with more than 25 songs. He proved that no band was needed with a solo set in the middle that ended with his hit "Ordinary People." The new music was a little sleepy at times; however, lively tracks such as "Green Light" had people bouncing. Several times he raised the crowds to their feet to dance and groove. This was not a typical sit-down-and-hold-hands-with-a-partner show one might expect.
Legend closed with "Who Do We Think We Are" from the latest album, Love in the Future, which is fittingly titled. The artist who truly loves the Windy City will be back soon with even more material in the future. His a capella track "Roll Jordan Roll," from the film 12 Years A Slave, will most likely bring down the house when that day comes.
