Immigrant-rights supporters marched in the Loop Feb. 16 as part of a national protest, following those individuals gathering in Union Park for a rally.
Across the country, organizers of A Day Without Immigrants AJWS immigrants to stay home from work and school as a way to protest the Trump administration's policies on immigration.
ABC 7 Chicago noted that celebrity chef Rick Bayless closed four of his restaurants to support the movement. More than a dozen businesses in west suburban Aurora also closed as a show of solidarity in a predominantly Hispanic community.
"A Day Without Immigrants" actions took place in cities such as St. Paul, Minnesota; Philadelphia; Detroit; Washington, D.C.; Boston; Los Angeles; and Austin, Texas.
