WAUKEGAN, IL (May 26, 2011)--Former Vermont Governor and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean announced his support for Sheyman's campaign on Thursday, noting the strength of Sheyman's bid against Republican Rep. Robert Dold in Illinois' 10th Congressional District.
Calling Sheyman "a grassroots progressive" who is "putting together a campaign to win in Illinois," Dean called on the over one million members of Democracy for America (DFA), including over 60,000 in Illinois, to donate to his campaign.
"Ilya has dedicated his life to moving this country forward and we need more people with his vision and integrity in Congress," Dean said in an email blast to his network on Thursday morning. "This is a Democratic district, and we can win it and a Democratic majority in 2012 with your support today."
Dean's endorsement will likely provide a major fundraising boost for Sheyman from DFA members in the 10th District and nationwide, adding to an already strong operation that has seen early support from local community members and leaders.
"I'm proud to have the support of Governor Dean, a champion for the progressive values that are driving my campaign," said Sheyman. "His endorsement adds to the incredible momentum and excitement we've seen since I announced my candidacy."
Sheyman, a community organizer with strong roots in the northern Illinois suburbs of Buffalo Grove and Waukegan, announced his candidacy last month after demonstrating early fundraising success during an exploratory campaign. With the Democratic nomination in the primary election in March 2012, he'll take on Rep. Dold, who has been in office for only five months.
