Windy City Times drove the Indy 500 to see Idina Menzel at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The entertainer known as Wicked's Elphaba performed with 69 musicians for a sold-out crowd.
Along with the orchestra, a local radio station formed a glee club singing sections of "Seasons of Love" from Rent with her. "Defying Gravity" took off with a rendition that only Menzel can provide. Musicals were, of course, a focusfrom Funny Girl to Finian's Rainbowand this was a rare opportunity to hear the songstress sing an a capella version of "For Good" from Wicked, dedicating it to the audience. She explained that her song "Gorgeous," from the album I Stand, is about everyone having the freedom to love whomever they want.
Menzel's stories kept the pace up as she described homemade singing competitions with husband Taye Diggs while changing her son's diapers before belting out Louis Armstrong's "I Feel Smoochie." She stopped herself in the middle of singing Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" (featured in an episode of Glee) to explain what it was like behind the scenes and the curiosities of the lyrics.
The stage terrace seats on either side of the stage catching Menzel's backside were suddenly transformed into the best seats in the house when she broke into Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious," complete with a dance in the purple evening gown for the lucky ticket holders. She had many such moments throughout the night, with not a Broadway diva moment in sight, before closing the show with Annie's "Tomorrow" to a standing ovation. Plans are in the works for her to touch down in Chicago soon.
