The Hunters C-Division softball team captured its second out-of-state tournament of the year, claiming the title Oct. 11 in the Show-Me Showdown, sponsored by the Heart of America Softball League in Kansas City.
Hunters twice defeated the host Kansas City Wicked, including a 15-11 win in the deciding game, to claim the championship. Hunters won a tournament in Minneapolis earlier in the year, and also had fifth-place finishes this year at tournaments in Tampa Bay, Fla., and Birmingham, Ala.
"We had very consistent play," throughout the tournament, said Hunters team manager Brian Kettner. "Despite [ playing ] in extremely cold weather conditions, we stuck together, stayed in games and then were able to pull out victories."
Hunters finished with a 6-2 record.
The Jackhammer Bombers also played in the tournament.
"We had clutch hitting, great pitching and spectacular catches in the outfield," said Kettner, who saw action as the team's second baseman.
Randy Detert was the Hunters pitcher. Nick Padjen and Matt Levin were the team's power hitters, while Rob Burton and Joe Cappelletti each delivered clutch hits, Kettner said.
"Joey had a clutch triple in one of the early games," Kettner said. "We were down by seven at the time, but Joey's hit gave us the leadand we rode that [ hit ] the rest of the tournament."
The Hunters team will travel to Palm Springs, Calif., in January for its next out-of-state tournament.
