A new candidate in one of Chicago's aldermanic contests may be a familiar figure to fans of house music.

Julian "Jumpin'" Perez—known as one of the godfathers of house music in Chicago—is seeking to unseat 26th Ward incumbent Roberto Maldonado, WGN-TV reported. The 26th Ward represents portions of Humboldt Park, Hermosa, Belmont Cragin and Logan Square.

Perez got his start DJ'ing in the '80s and hit the B96 airwaves in 1989, building a strong following ever since.

Perez—who has run nightclubs, retail stores and a real estate/mortgage company—said the issues he is most passionate about are cultivating small-business development, supporting teachers and education, investing in the community and fighting crime.

According to his campaign website, VoteForJulian.com, Perez established the Julian Jumpin Perez Foundation in 2019. The foundation aims to provide assistance to families, individuals and organizations.
