Prostate deaths down: According to American Cancer Society statistics in USA Today, mortality rates for prostate cancer have dropped by about 33 percent in North America and by 20 percent in Europe since 1990. Reported factors in the increased survival rate include better surgical treatments and earlier detection.
Depression and pain: According to Internal Medicine News, reports on the findings of a survey presented at the American Psychiatric Association's annual meeting indicate that almost 70 percent of patients with major depression also have chronic pain. The findings suggest that remission of depression may be harder to achieve because antidepressant therapy typically does not address chronic pain.
Bowflex recall: As published in CNN.com, hundreds of thousands of popular Bowflex fitness machines are being recalled because of safety problems that have resulted in more than 70 injuries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the machine's backboard bench can unexpectedly collapse when being used in the incline position.
Black lesbians and health education: A national health education program for African American women who partner with women was launched by the Mautner Project. The program is led by Cheryl Pearson-Fields, MPH, deputy director of The Mautner Project. The program, funded in part by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will launch with sessions focused on breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening, smoking cessation, nutrition and exercise and coming out to your physician.
