Hadestown ( a take on an ancient Greek myth ) dominated the 73rd annual Tony Awards—winning eight categories ( out of 14 nominations ) on June 9 at Radio City Music Hall, including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical.

In winning Best Musical, Hadestown edged The Prom, Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations, Tootsie and Beetlejuice. The show's other winners included openly gay veteran Andre De Shields, whose credits include 1975's The Wiz.

Some of the other acting winners included Bryan Cranston ( Best Leading Actor in a Play, for Network ), Stephanie J. Block ( Best Leading Actress in a Musical, for The Cher Show ), Elaine May ( winning her first award at age 87, for Best Leading Actress in a Play, for The Waverly Gallery ) and Ali Stroker ( an LGBT individual who is the first wheelchair-bound performer to win, as Best Featured Actress in a Musical, for Oklahoma! )

Boys in the Band—a play about a group of gay men who gather for a birthday party in New York City, and which premiered off-Broadway in 1968—won for Best Revival of a Play. To Kill a Mockingbird, which is the highest-grossing U.S. play in history, won one award ( Celia Keenan-Bolger, for Best Featured Actress in a Play ).

Rosemary Harris, Terrence McNally and Harold Wheeler received Special Tony Awards for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater, while actress Judith Light was honored with the Isabelle Stevenson Award.
