WASHINGTON The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, today reacted to the tragic shooting involving U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. HRC President Joe Solmonese released the following statement:
"We are shocked and saddened by the events involving Congresswoman Giffords and our hearts go out to her and the other victims of this awful tragedy. Gabby Giffords is a champion for LGBT equality and a principled leader for Arizona. We wish her a speedy recovery as our thoughts and prayers are with her family as well as with the families of all of those touched by today's horrific violence."

( New York, NY, January 10, 2011 ) — In response to the weekend's shootings in Arizona which left six dead, including U.S. District Judge John Roll, and six injured, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords ( D-Tucson ) , Lambda Legal Executive Director Kevin Cathcart issued the following statement:
"Like many Americans, I spent much of the weekend glued to the news as the horrifying events in Tucson unfolded. We have heard from our members and friends in Arizona about their shock and grief - we share those feelings and send our condolences to the victims and their families.
"Gabrielle Giffords has been an effective leader and a steady friend to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. We wish her and the other injured victims a speedy and complete recovery.
"A healthy democracy does not have room for a culture of violence and intimidation. Political leaders and judges must be able to do their jobs without having to fear for their lives. Now more than ever, we all must work to ensure they're able to do so."
