Millions of people have taken to holiday shopping on the Internet. Why? Let me count the ways: It saves time, allows you to shop 24 hours a day, lets you locate hard-to-find items, and gets those holiday crowds out of the way. There's also like the fact that you don't have to wrap anything—a personal fave of mine.
My list of sites this year reflects a variety of tastes. Whether you're looking for something extravagant, creative, practical, or lower-priced, there's something here for you.
Botanica of Boca [at www. botanicaofboca.com]: This intriguing site features exquisite items such as Edgar Berebi goblets, Arthur Court animal-themed trays, and Moorcroft pottery. However, 'exquisite' doesn't necessarily mean 'expensive.' This site offers gift ideas depending on how much you want to spend (including an 'Under $25' section). Whether you want to get crab spreaders for someone is another story.
TeNo [www.teno.com]: This site has some of the coolest jewelry items you'll ever see. Check out everything from necklaces to partnership rings. Moreover, they're made of everything from platinum to a sleek stainless steel/rubber combination. Be forewarned, though: The prices are not for the faint of heart.
ShopNBC.com [www.shopnbc.com]: Usually I wouldn't promote a site connected with a television network, but I try to find bargains so you won't have to. Revealed on such shows as Oprah's, this site has a 'Clearance' section with items like a $9.99 down throw. (Yes, you read that correctly.) However, check out the jewelry section. There are simulated (read: CZ) items that look so much like actual diamond-studded fare that people might not believe you even if you tell them the truth —so don't tell them.
Deutsche Optik [www.deutscheoptik. com]: Whether you want to show your butch side or just get something for that relative who can't get enough of the military, this site might be for you. Find items ranging from lanterns to binoculars (for surveying ... the city, yeah, that's it) to bamboo-shaft hunting arrows from India. OK, that last one is too 'Xena, Warrior Princess' even for me.
Half.com [www.half.com]: Yes, I mentioned this site last year—and I'll probably list it every year. This site has a distinct advantage over its cousin eBay: No one has time to snatch the item away from you at the last minute. Buy everything from CDs to computer hardware to books for prices that are sometimes ridiculously low.
Shopping.com [www.shopping.com]: If you like to comparison shop (and actually have the time), this is the ultimate site. Choose from millions of items, compare prices, and purchase from a trusted store. It's that easy.
Godiva [www.godiva.com]: You know I had to squeeze some food in here. For years, Godiva has symbolized pure chocolate decadence. Choose from holiday baskets, gift baskets, or best sellers. Anyone would love to get an item from here—although that same person may be cursing your name while spending extra time in the health club in January.
Candle Comfort Quality Candles [www.candlecomfort.com]: You undoubtedly know someone who's into candles, so why not add a little light (and scent) into their lives? This site has just about every type of candle you could possibly imagine, including tapered, votive, and aromatherapy ones.
Bluefly [www.bluefly.com]: If you want Dolce & Gabbana items without paying Dolce & Gabbana prices, this site is your one-stop shop. Select clothing items and accessories from a variety of designers. If you know someone who could use a 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy' makeover, start here.
Brookstone [www.brookstone.com]: Gadgets, gadgets, gadgets ... who doesn't love them? Find everything from voice-activated remotes to wine opener sets. What's more, this site makes things easier by letting you shop by price or category. The coolest item here? It's undoubtedly the Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga arcade game—and it'll only set you back three grand.
Harry and David [www.harryanddavid. com]: If you want to offer something edible but that's more substantial than Godiva chocolates, hit this site. You can sign someone up for the Fruit of the Month Club®, select a gourmet item (salmon sausages, anyone?), or even get someone a healthful item (e.g., low-fat cakes).
eBags [www.ebags.com]: Gym bags, PDA cases, luggage, wallets, laptop backpacks, messenger bags, and even toiletry kits are here ... and for pretty decent prices. I've shopped here—but, mysteriously, never for anyone else.
Antique Wine Company [www.antique-wine.com]: Lastly, for that special oenophile in your life (and, trust me, that's legal), how about a rare vintage? A case of 1961 Ch Palmer wine will only set you back $18,000—before shipping. Hey, if you're going to splurge, splurge spectacularly.
