Overriding Gov. Rod Blagojevich's August veto, Rep. Karen Yarbrough's, D-Maywood, legislation to create a lottery ticket to help fund Illinois HIV/AIDS prevention efforts became law.
Now, a 'Quality of Life' lottery ticket will fund HIV/AIDS prevention once it is created. Yarbrough's legislation became law Oct. 11, according to a press release from her office. The changes made by the governor, the release stated, would have weakened the legislation. However, these changes weren't accepted by the General Assembly.
An instant scratch-off game will be created by the Illinois Department of Revenue, and people will be able to purchase the tickets at their local convenience stores. After payouts, all net revenues will go to HIV/AIDS prevention organizations.
A reception to celebrate the new law will be held Fri., Nov. 16, at the Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 North Central Park, 6:30-8:30 p.m. RSVP at 773-533-7520. |
